She is certainly not afraid of controversy; in fact, it seems to follow her every move. Remembering back: when she was part of the presidential campaign there was a big fuss around the cost of her makeup artist. TV commentators had a field day because Palin’s makeup artist, Amy Strozzi, was paid $22,800 (for two weeks of work) for transforming a hockey Mom, fresh faced Alaskan fisherwomen, into an attractive national personality. This was tricky because too much glamour would be a turn off to many voters and too little would project a non serious side. There was a lot riding on this makeup transformation.

Check out Nancy Pelosi, our Speaker of the House. Here’s a savvy woman who knows power dressing and the significance of a good make up look and good haircut. Although there are no articles attributing a cost to her look, her favorite designer is Armani. She states “An Armani suit is a woman’s amour”. Ms. Pelosi is always coiffed and made up for every high definition TV appearance. She exudes confidence and power.

One of the greatest political lessons in the positive power of make up occurred during the Nixon – Kennedy campaign. The debate between these two candidates had TV sets tuned in all over the nation. Kennedy appeared tanned and healthy; Nixon appeared wan and washed out. Even though the substance of Nixon’s answers was strong and focused his minus factor appearance on TV was a strong point in his election loss.
This is really food for thought. How we look does matter. How we look does result in judgments about our ability. No matter how capable our persona, how strong our resume, judgments and decisions can be made on how you appear.
The Obama’s political mystic is heightened by Michelle Obama being proclaimed the new American priestess of fashion by Vogue magazine. We have not seen the cost of this, but this international persona is powerful. Her style, her hair, her makeup is all copied. She is seen as a force for American design and style. The international “crowd power” on their recent trips has cemented this image. There is a cost for this image and politicians know it is a critical line item in the success formula.

On conceptualizing Palin’s look:
Palin was running for an extremely important office, so she had to walk a fine line between keeping her looking beautiful and fresh, but also appropriate for the second highest job in the land. There were probably three or four core looks her makeup artist stuck with, using different color combinations to mix it up.

On working with Palin:
Reports claim that Palin was apprehensive about her makeover, which I think is normal for any woman who is used to doing everything for themselves. The whole point was to create a power look for the second highest job in the country and to leave the candidate as free as possible to have meetings, and tend to more official business knowing judgments were being made continuously on her efforts and how she looked.
By just following a few simple tips that PurelyPro offers, you can look as good as Palin and Pelosi without the high price tag and entourage.
