It’s the middle of summer and it’s hot! People are sizzling on beaches, turning up the AC, wearing light gauzy fashions and craving refreshing lemon, lime and orange based drinks. Embrace the fact that hot colors add to the fever pitch of the season.
Right NOW is the time to wear those bright colors after a long, long winter of wearing black and white. I am not knocking these classic colors, but if ever there is a time to add a new powerful color to your lipstick collection it is NOW. The bold graphic colors of natural bright orange, ruby red, pink and other pop culture comic book colors is the happening of summer ‘09.
Summer means a change in your wardrobe and definitely demands a change occurring in your makeup drawer. What worked so well in colder months now dates the light clothes you wear? To jump start your summer metamorphosis begin with a great pink lipstick and cover with clear glitter glossware. Try “Bella” or “Wet Kiss” – I personally love these. The glitter gloss adds a punch of summer glamour and reflects in the sunlight.

Why focus on lipstick? Because now in the art community the symbol of lipstick is an item of force. Lipstick is an iconic pop culture image. Think of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine covers, Helmut Newton photos and the classic fashion pages of Vogue in the eighties. The lipstick barrel evokes power and glamour. It is the ultimate feminine symbol, a tool of beauty, an exclusively feminine concept of elevating to a better self. Sounds pretty deep, but the fashionista goddesses are really into it.

The artistic images of Warhol and Newton combine black and white and power colors. This image has inspired recent designers to take the pop culture colors to another level. They have graduated are now top drawer chic. These bright surreal prints with a pop culture feel add a witty element to the fashion and cosmetics industry.
Up and coming designers such as Belle Sauvage, Danielle Scutt, Issa, and Lady of Velvet have been influenced by the image of lipstick as it draws from 80’s vintage and 60’s futuristic prints now for a younger hipper contemporary market.

The lipstick color in fashion transcends to accessories and embellishments in the form of jewel encrusted broaches and sequins appliqués.
Fashion and make up, cosmetics and clothes, art and creative living – they all inter-relate. So when you are shopping for that new summer lipstick remember the color you choose is probably also hanging in a fashion boutique , on an art museum wall or resurfacing as colorful plastic glasses for the beach. IT’S A TOTAL THING!
