The Top Three Items Auto Show models love!

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

The Auto Show season is in high gear and the professional talents who work the shows have experienced great crowds in LA, Detroit, San Franciso and Miami. Because Purely Pro Cosmetics are worn by many of these product specialists I asked some of them what specific items they really liked in the cosmetic line which helped them look professional for their 6 or 8 hours shifts. One of their main concerns is looking good under bright lights with no time to look in the mirror. Another is maintaining a beauty look and being kind to their skin. As one busy specialist told me “I talk to people from the minute I enter the exhibit floor to the time I depart the convention hall. Having a make up line which stays put and is does not disappear makes my job easier”.
The top products Auto Show models like are :

1. The 5 well eyeshadow pallete - 5 different colors of eye shadow in one distinctive color hue is the beauty of this eye defining item. Instead of many different pots of eyehadow to put in a travel bag this single sleek case contains them all. Having five different choices means you can create several looks – from day to evening . The case travels easily and having 5 different shadows means it will last a whole season.

1.	At Toyota three of the “Kaisinettes” an accapella singing group smile for the camera using eye shadows from the five well palette “Grey Matter”. The group know their automotives products but also have the ability to perform songs highlighting vehicles of the brand.

2. Concealer – A trio of colors to blend under your eye to reduce circles or cover blemishes. A must item for everyone as every day our skin is not always perfect. For professional s this item means the difference between looking just ok or looking good.

2.	Working under intense conditions talking to the public all day means looking good all day. This Honda product specialist uses concealer to even out her skin and appear flawless.

3. Tinted moisterizer- After a day working the auto show floor moisturizing is a must and we combine a slight pigment color in the moisturizer so you can have great looking skin in your private time – like running to do errands or working out.

3.	Using a tinted moisturizer creates a natural look and keeps skin soft and dewy.

Keeping cosmetics organized and all together in one place means saved times when dong your makeup. A new item especially good for those of us who travel is the travel brush kit with just the important brushes you need in a portable pack.

Make up for the Holiday – Many Parties, Many Looks!

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

The Holiday season means many invites coming your way! It’s gathering time and time to see people!
Whether you are catching up with family or friends or meeting new people there are some makeup suggestions I have for these social rounds.

Your Holiday calendar may include several types of parties and there is a makeup appropriate and fabulous pattern for each social occasion. So let’s look at some of your options:

Holiday Drinks with Friends

Go with a casual touch here. It’s usually a casual environment so let your inner beauty and friendliness show through. Focus on looking good, but not over the top. Go prepared with some past photos of things you and your friends have done together or vintage photos of you in past Holiday mode. Also, learn a new joke or short witticism pertinent to the Holidays. Always bring a token gift for the hostess and remember lip-gloss is for everyone. I like to bring new lipsticks for everyone and we all have fun trying out the shades and commenting on them.

Wear a soft eye: our palette “Soft Yet Sexy” with its’ understated tones is perfect.

Use one coat of mascara. Here is a time for you to shine with your own natural self.

Holiday Cocktail Party

The cocktail party invitation is an excuse to add drama to your look. You have probably found the perfect dress and now it is time to add some glamour. Focus on your eyes and add generous dense eyeliner like Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Then add a thin line of sparkle eyeliner at the base. This will give you a diva look, but also will be a point of conversation. People will comment on your festive eyeliner – it is the Holidays and it adds sparkle to your evening.

Our new small portable brush collection is an ideal Holiday gift but also a necessity to reapplying makeup at a party.

The Black Tie Affair

This is the ultimate dress up affair. It could be New Year’s Eve, a friend’s Christmas wedding, or a special dinner invitation. You will want to glow with sophistication and panache. Black is usually the color most women will wear, we know the men are all in their standard tuxes. Try a pale pink mouth – tawny glowing cheeks and Smokey power slightly under the eyes. Wear one piece of great shimmer or sparkly jewelry like dangle earrings. It will reflect light next to your face and heighten your glow.

Richard Avedon – Photographer – Capturing fashion styles and makeup

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
I recently saw the Richard Avedon exhibit at the Detroit institute of Arts. Avedon was the primo photographer of fashion in the 1960’s-80. His signature photos show models in movement and clothes in a state of action. The exhibit took you through the beginning photos to his cutting edge New Yorker photo-torials. You could see the progression of a photographer genius taking the best concepts and magnifying them and interrupting for the future.
Richard Avedon photograph : Imparting a new sense of vitality to his models

He loved beautiful models making them look interesting and exquisite just like the painter, Renoir, who produce beautiful portraiture. Avedon liked to develop relationships with models so they could easily get natural shots because they trusted each other and knew each other well. He created legendary fashion names like: Suzy Parker and Dovinna. In the 60’s he with Dina Vreeland, fashion priestess for Vogue, made famous the models Veruska and Penelope Tree. His alliance with Vogue magazine working closely with, the priestess of fashion, gave him the stature of one of the best well known and respected photographers in the world. From 1960 to 1980 he was Vogue magazine’s exclusive cover photogher.

His sense of beauty and definition of beautiful women gave beauty a new concept. He liked women with unusual faces. He favored angular and classic lines representing nontraditional beauty. The European face fascinated him. He did not prefer models with mass advertising correct looks. His penchant for Jacqueline de Ribes and Baroness De Rothschild demonstrated his taste for interesting timeless beauty faces. The models were no longer “Coat hangers” but real people with personalities.
Personally - when looking at the collection of fashion photographs I was struck how he could reveal the character, nonchalance or romance of a dress, suit or hat. He created a desire to be chic and well dressed and good make up. Naturally, the fashions he photographed were amazing – all the big names were captured by his camera – Dior, Givenchy, Balenciaga, and Lily Dache.
One photograph that struck me was one of a model primping before a mirror in the gorgeous marble bathroom of Helena Rubenstein, the diva of modern cosmetics. I took close notice of the makeup in his photographs through the decades. If you want to see how our concept of makeup has changed you need just to look at Avedon’s tome. The one thing that remains most constant is a focus on good eye brows and lips. Eyebrows in the 50’s were plucked to thin lines of color, today there is no one trend it follows each persons’ look and preference.

Beauty Versatility – A New product -The LipGLoss Quad

Four Colors – one compact – lipliner brush and the glamour possibilities are through the roof!

I’m back and I am so excited about the revolution in lip gloss. I can’t believe that 10 years ago this was not even an everyday product. Just goes to show you those cosmetic chemists are hard at work developing new things. Well, our resident idea people have worked overtime during the year producing the Lipgloss QUAD compact. We introduced it last spring, revitalized it for the fall and now for Holiday it sizzles with class and shine.

Purely Pro’s Lipgloss Quad, a sleek compact filled with four different colors and a retractable lip brush is the ultimate new item for your makeup bag.

Purely Pro’s Lipgloss Quad, a sleek compact filled with four different colors and a retractable lip brush is the ultimate new item for your makeup bag.

So what is it? Four different gloss colors in one compact form, plus a lipliner brush for professional results. This gives extreme shine without being too oily. It is a stay put gloss with vitamin E. It is so unique and you have a plethora of colors and mixing options. The professional makeup artists who have seen this not only grabbed the product but also have raved about the broad range as it gives them the ability to create many gloss colors.
So with this past success we had to create a special lipgloss quad for the Holiday season. After all, this is the supreme party season. Your party awaits! Any beauty diva will see this adds to the perfection of a look.

Lip beauty tip: Lips are a three step régime.

A. Lipliner begins to create the outline – Here is where you can create a fuller lip look by going slightly beyond your own lips

B. Lipstick fills in with color – Here is where you create the smooth pout

C. Lipgloss highlights and intensifies – Here is the difference between looking good and glamorous

When you are cruising through fashion magazines focus on the lips of top models. Even in the most natural of photo shoots the three step régime is still there in neutral colors. For the most stylized of shots lip power is maximized.

How to Get Great Lips! The “insider” scoop

How to Get Great Lips! The “insider” scoop

How to Get Great Lips! The “insider” scoop
1. Brush your teeth or whiten them so they are really white!

2. Lipgloss is a moisturizer too. Use every day so your lips do not dehydrate and crack.

3. When applying lipstick, dab slightly with tissue paper, then apply a light coat of loose powder, reapply lipstick. This is a ‘secret” for making lipstick last longer.

4. Before going into the shower apply Vaseline on your lips. Do not wash it off. Several minutes after your shower wipe off with coldwater – “presto “a lip deep moisturizing treatment.

5. Exfoliate lips: mix a pinch of sugar with a drop of water – rub and rinse off. Your lips will be soft. You must add moisturizer next so lips will not dry out.

Lips are a make or break part of your look and a lipgloss quad is the best and ultimate new tool (beauty product and moisturizer) for your make up bag.

Men’s Body Wash – The New Deal

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

The bar of soap in your shower is on its way out! Slip sliding away and down the drain!
The “Body Wash” concept is increasingly popular among men. Use it to shower, wash your hair and shave. Yes, one product – multiple uses. Many men know the benefits of shaving in the shower. It saves time and makes a guy totally clean and fresh. It’s a good thing – women like this!

Purely Pro All Over Wash for Men

Purely Pro All Over Wash for Men - Click here to buy!

In a 2008 study by Mintel, a market research firm, only 24% of men buy soap, with a new generation of men preferring the hipper option of body gels. GQ, Esquire and Men’s Health have all published articles on this new phenomenon calling it a gentleman’s way to” maximize cleaning up and looking good.” For male travelers, the wash fits into a travel case with a razor, add after shave and voila: Simplicity. Body wash crosses many sectors and generations. Teen age boys need to combat the emerging hormone challenge and the need to shave; hipsters know the power clean good looks have on girls; the sophisticated man, who already has confidence in himself, is looking to maximize time.

While woman love using specific shampoos for different colored hair and experimenting with body gel scents and mood fragrances, men like convenience and a multifunction formula. Make it simple that’s a man’s motto.

Men have embraced the concept of body wash. Liquid body soaps are the rage now having a 53% increase in sales from 2003, when they first appeared on the market, according to Mintel. The men’s body wash segment of the business is experiencing more growth than the women’s and unisex market. Most men see it as a product giving them an edge of time saving convenience. It is a travel must have. In homage to the totally masculine product, even the NFL and NASCAR have their own brands of body wash.

I am proud we introduced a “Men’s Body Wash” into the Purely Pro line two years ago and the feedback has been rewarding. We placed it in travel kits for male Product Specialists who traveled widely. We also had success with professional men who wanted a new product. The multifunction – shower/shave/hair wash has been the decisive factor in its success.

On a scale of one-to-ten this Purely Pro Cosmetics preview party had all the makings and Hollywood glamour to make any top ten list, as Purely Pro opened its Beverly Hills boutique doors to an invitation only event. The Purely Pro Cosmetics premiere was about women who love makeup testing and experiencing new makeup looks.

The party theme was makeup and mimosas.

Inspired by Hollywood glamour and elegance the theme of the celebration was makeup and mimosas. Purely Pro’s West Coast manager, George Nasci, with the help of his glamorous assistant, Clarisce Tolston, hosted the party. As you entered the boutique each guest entered via, what else, the red carpet. The energy was high as celebrity makeup artists created magic with the Purely Pro palette.
“The premiere was phenomenal. Fun was had by all! The women raved about our unique pigments, vegan brushes, and mineral makeup line,” Clarisce (pictured below) said.

Including our lip gloss, this was the big hit of the evening. The gloss is formulated to give extreme shine with stay-put application; the lip gloss names include big sellers like Killer Heels, Pink Lady, and Bad Bessie.

Babes in Makeup Land – The Next Generation of Gorgeous

Friday, August 14th, 2009

By Margery Krevsky

Young girls have been playing with makeup since cosmetics were created. Ancient Egyptians put kohl eyeliner on their children believing it would improve eyesight. Royal children from China wore nail polish, which was forbidden to the masses. In the toy industry the girls’ market has exploded, for it is filled with plethora of toys which involves playing with hair and makeup.
Give a toddler lipstick, and she knows what to do with it. Paint herself or the wall! Present her with blusher, nail polish and perfume, and she is enchanted and curious. Children want to copy their stylish mothers as children are naturally attracted to the bright, glittery and grown-up behavior.

Pretty in Pink - Young children are naturally attracted to bright colors

Pretty in Pink - Young children are naturally attracted to bright colors

This natural interest in color and “dolling up” is being supported by toy manufacturers and cosmetics companies alike. Mattel makes stick-on painted fingernails. Next to the pencil boxes at the local drug store are rows of inexpensive eye shadow, blusher, nail polish and lip colors. This is a playground for teens and curious children also. Maybelline’s bubblegum-flavored lip gloss goes nicely with a mouthful of “Bubblicious”. Tinkerbell has sold fragrances, lipstick and nail polish to little girls for 38 years, refusing to make eye shadow and mascara because they didn’t want to tell young girls to look older. Nevertheless, the company is now strongly considering bringing out a more complete line of makeup under another name.
Girls from the ages of 12 to 17 experiment the most consistently with cosmetics. They start out playing with lip gloss and nail color. Then they move into blusher and eye shadow. What is the correct age for a teen to wear makeup every day? Personally, I think 15 is a good age to wear eyeliner and mascara. I also think there are two things a girl can never learn too soon: make up and money. If a girl can handle the concepts of balancing a checkbook, saving, and investing, she has the thinking skills to handle makeup.
Fragrances are also being blended for children, and even infants. Tartine et Chocolat, a citrusy fragrance by Parfums Givenchy, is designed for babies, and on up to 12-year-olds. The classic Johnson and Johnson’s Baby Powder is available in Lavender and Citrus.

Even before they are able to spend their allowances at the cosmetics counter, young girls are playing with makeup and fragrance. This year, the big seller is Li’l Miss Makeup, from Mattel. The doll resembles a girl that is 5 or 6 years old. When cold water is painted on, she springs eyebrows, colored eyelids, fingernails, tinted lips and a heart-shaped beauty mark.
Grandmothers - especially those who came of age in the 1950s, when cosmetics were just being made for the public - may be horrified at these young makeup enthusiasts. But note big dollars are spent on after school dance classes and recitals and creative theatre and clown schools where children are being taught the craft and art of makeup. Disney does a booming business at Cinderella’s Castle creating magical hairdos and soft glamour makeup for tots before they attend a Princess breakfast to meet the glamorous: Snow White, Jasmine, Aurora, Belle, and Cinderella. Wanting to look like their animated movie idols
Like many other things, the decision to wear makeup may be reactive. Your mother wears it, you don’t and your daughter does - painted to the hilt at 6 years old.

Apologies to the Stars -Hollywood without Makeup

Thursday, August 6th, 2009
Julia Roberts scowling and glowing

Julia Roberts scowling and glowing

It’s a booming business among the paparazzi! Getting unflattering photos of stars for the covers of supermarket tabloids results in some big checks for photographers willing to stalk, plan, and follow. One of the things stars give up is the ability to be a “normal” person. We all expect beautiful high definition looks in every photo and slice of film. No it’s not always fair to see them au natural, but it sells tabloids and gets some headlines that generates hefty revenue.

However, there is a lesson here regarding the power of makeup. Few stars are truly, naturally beautiful forever. Sorry to burst your bubble! Most of them require a savvy makeup artist and stylist to create their primo look or change their image. This is a major player in a star’s entourage. Think of Madonna and the numerous beauty changes she has had. Make up a hair have made it possible for her to morph from one phase of her career to another.
Most celebrities are experts at makeup and can create some pretty glamorous looks on their own; after all it is their business. But like all of us we need down time to relax and chill out from the stress of a busy lifestyle. These are the moments paparazzi like to seize. Being photographed after an aggressive workout or dashing into a store may not be one’s finer beauty movement.
